Downtown Celebrates Constitution Day

September 20, 2018 - Several schools in the Bakersfield City School District celebrated Constitution Day on September 17th with various activities to promote the education of this important historical document.  Downtown Elementary welcomed special guest speaker, Kern County Superior Court Judge Susan Gill, who spoke to all the 8th graders about the Constitution and the U.S Judicial System.

Judge Gill shared with the students important about details of the Constitution, read excerpts from a book titled This Is Our Constitution, and answered the students’ questions on various topics about the United States and her role as Superior Court Judge.  Judge Gill also took time to meet the students and take some pictures.

Daniel Meyer, 8th grader at Downtown and student council president, said, “I really enjoyed having Judge Susan Gill in our class today.  It was interesting to hear what she had to say about the Constitution and how it applies to our country and laws.”

Constitution Day was created to remember that on September 17th, 1787, this important document was created and signed by our founding fathers, putting into motion a system of government that is still in effect today.
