Harlem Globetrotter Visits Downtown School

February 15, 2018 – Downtown School welcomed guest speaker and Harlem Globetrotter, Orlando “El Gato” Melendez, to their campus to talk about bully prevention and to showcase some of his basketball skills.  El Gato talked about his journey from playing basketball in Puerto Rico as a young boy to becoming the first Puerto-Rican born member of the Harlem Globetrotters.

His main message to the students was the “ABC’s of Bully Prevention. “The A is for action, B is for bravery and C is for compassion,” he said. “We want to teach the kids how to use these tools on a daily basis, as human beings, to deal with bullying in school and outside of school.”

Parker Dolan, a student at Downtown, talked about his experience. “Seeing a Globetrotter was a cool experience. I had never seen any of them in person,” he said. “What I learned today is how to stick up for other people when you see bullying, and if you are experiencing bullying to let a teacher or other adult know.”

El Gato’s visit came at a perfect time, as BCSD schools, including Downtown, had just finished Kindness Week – an event that featured activities, guest speakers and assemblies to promote anti-bullying efforts and spreading kindness at school and in the Community.
