Welcome to Sixth Grade!
I am looking forward to an exciting year in 6th grade. For all of us, it will be a time of transitioning and learning many new things. Just a little about who I am: I am a wife of 29 years, mother of two young adults. This year is the beginning my 38th year in the Bakersfield City School District. I love children and feel that I am one of their greatest advocates, especially when it comes to their education. I, like many others feel a mind is a terrible thing to waste. I love to make learning fun, but as we all know, there is a time for all things and when it is time for learning, I demand your child’s full attention.
It is important that you and your children be informed of my standards of classroom behavior so everyone knows what is expected. I have always found parents to be very supportive of good classroom behavior so their child has a good environment for maximum learning.
Our class guidelines for learning in addition to the Downtown School rules are as follows:
- Use appropriate language at all times.
- Respect the rights of others to be heard during class discussion time.
- Respect the teacher’s right to teach and be heard during instruction time.
- Change tasks quickly and quietly.
- Complete class work and home work on time.
Consequences for not following the guidelines:
- “All children will be treated fairly, but not equal”
- Name on board (warning)
- One check and lose 5 minutes of recess
- Complete a Power of Choice form
- Two checks, lose whole recess
- Call home
- Request for parent, teacher, and student conference
In order for our year to be a successful year it will take you, your child and me working together as a team working towards the same goal. It is my pledge to you and your child to do the very best job I am allowed to do in furthering the educational path of your children. I ask your patience with me as I become adjusted to my new assignment.
I will be utilizing the Teacher Ease program to send progress reports home on a regular basis. Your children will also receive weekly conduct reports, please sign and return. I need the e-mail address of all parents who are interested in participating in this program.
In sixth grade we will continue to work toward advancing our skills in reading, math, science (Earth) and social studies (Ancient History). Students will receive 3 report cards with progress reports in between the times of receiving report cards. Sixth graders will be going to Camp K.E.E.P. At camp, they will experience a whole new way of looking at science.
Any questions or concerns you might have about what is going on in the classroom concerning your child, please feel free to come, call you concern or question. Communication between teacher and parent is very important in order to develop an understanding about what is going on, so feel free to call (631-5920) ,e-mail me (greenv@bcsd.com), or come by with any concern you might have.
